Assuring Grace

“When I consider thy heavens, the work of thy fingers, The moon and the stars, which thou hast ordained; What is man, that thou art mindful of him? And the son of man, that thou visitest him?” Psalm 8:3-4 KJV

Reflecting over the fragility of human nature during this period of pandemic, it dawned on me that we are but mere men.

The silence that took over the earth at lockdown, the fear that gripped man, the animals that took over the street, and the Red Sahara dust that covered the cars on the street; triggered some serious thoughts. Watching the confusion that swept over mankind, revealing our gross limitations against our claims of "master of all", made me to repeat the same question David asked: “What is Man?”.

A breath taken away from man is the end of his life, acquisitions, boastings, wealth, beauty, pride, education, poverty, sufferings, conceit, arrogance, injustice, oppression, deceit, fun, pleasure, and so on.

A deep look at the composite of man, the last to be created, formed from the dust and God’s breath made him a living soul. “And the LORD God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul.” Genesis 2:7 KJV

Although man is beautifully made by God with wisdom and strength. Given the power to dominate the world, man has gone to the space, to the deep waters, tamed animals, conquered the environment, advanced in technology. Man has also lowered himself to worship idols, walked in disobedience, hatred, murder bitterness, and is deceptive. Man is like the grass of the field, glowing in the day, and in the evening is withered. Compared to the glory of the universe, man is a tiny creepy thing on the surface of one of the smallest planets, yet God is mindful of him. The wind blows off man, the billows and tempest swallows man in their fury, the volcanos consumes man in their rage, the wildfires renders him helpless. God gave His only begotten son for man that is alive but on the inside is rotten, man that can drop at any time and will be forgotten for life. In all man’s glory, his days are short and numbered. “What is Man?”

Looking at the earth hanging in the space like a rolling ball surrounded by darkness, with other planets twice or ten times bigger, Isaiah 40 bows our faces in humility.

“Lift up your eyes on high, and behold who hath created these things, that bringeth out their host by number: he calleth them all by names by the greatness of his might, for that he is strong in power; not one faileth.” Isaiah 40:26 KJV

Lord teach us to number our days, to know indeed that we are but mere men who cannot boast of tomorrow. Teach us to be humble before You, that we may find grace in Your sight.
