Assuring Grace

“Every branch in me that beareth not fruit he taketh away: and every branch that beareth fruit, he purgeth it, that it may bring forth more fruit.” John 15:2 KJV.

Every branch that bears fruit is purged, that it may bring more fruits.

Recently we have been planting some seedlings from different countries and climates at the mission house. That got me into studying and watching how the plants are grown and maintained, especially in countries they do not originate from.

One of the figs is vigorously growing and has brought forth fruits already. We were happy with that as amateurs. Watching videos on maintenance made us realise it must be pruned or it will spread all over the place and will not produce as much fruit in the future. It’s being planted in front of the house with other plants and requires that the aesthetic view be kept.

Pruning will contain it, keep it to a desired height and yield more fruits. The branches, when cut accordingly, will be planted for more fruits. Pruning takes away the dead branches, allowing for a healthier plant. It also reduces pest infestations and prevents snakes from visiting. Pruning is done with a sharp garden scissors and not what the tree wanted.

Reflecting on this scripture reminded me of God’s dealings with His children. As we grow in our Christian faith, the word of God cuts off some excesses that will not allow us to yield desired fruits. The excesses of self, bitterness, worldliness, culture, bad habits, malice, pride, and you can name as many. Some of these excesses require the word that is sharper than a two-edged sword to cut off. It may not be convenient, but it is for our good. We may complain that the process is hard and harsh. Some bad attitudes and stubbornness can grow out of order, especially when backed up with demons.

Some people argue that the only way to win people is to speak gently and softly and literally beg people to repent. It is not always the case. Some need to hear of the burning hell before they can repent.

Taking us through the process of correction and chastening gets us to maturity and purity. Spiritual pruning takes away doubt and unbelief that may grow out of order. Through the word, indiscipline, carelessness, pre-eminence, and stubbornness which can be confused with some aspects of spirituality are purged.

Jesus prunes them off to make us good for the Master’s use, and to sanctify us for His return. He knows our frame, that they will pick up some dust as we journey through this life. The washing of the water and blood keeps us clean. The purging will keep us light to bear more fruits.

Not all hard circumstances are for destruction, some are for our learning and to gain wisdom. Not all lack is for destruction, some may be to teach us to be content. Not all sickness is unto death, but to learn how to be disciplined especially if we eat what we should not, or to show us a miracle. Some disappointments may be appointed to deliver us from future pain and regret.

Jesus knows what is necessary to get us ready for His return. Let us yield to the dealing of the Holy Spirit to be perfected in Jesus’ name, Amen. .
